A European LIFE project, meaning?

LIFE COTEAUX GASCONS IS A LIFE PROJECT AND IS PART OF THE NATURE & BIODIVERSITY CATEGORY OF THE EU'S LIFE PROGRAMME

LIFE PROGRAMME

Launched in 1992 by the European Union, the LIFE programme (European Union Financial Instrument for the Environment) is a funding programme for environmental, climate and nature conservation projects.

It is designed to contribute to the implementation and development of environmental policy and legislation.

ORIGIN OF THE PROJECT AND OBJECTIVES

A statement :

  • Biodiversity of agro-pastoral environments is connected to livestock management.
  • A significant role played by agro-pastoral environments in ecological continuity at all local, regional, national and European levels.
  • A decrease in agro-pastoral environments and their state of conservation.
  • Livestock farming is experiencing difficulties and will have to cope with a large number of retirements in the next few years.

Therefore, ADASEA du Gers, in collaboration with Safer Occitanie, the Conservatoire Botanique national des Pyrénées et de Midi-Pyrénées and the CPIE Pays Gersois, developed this ambitious project to:

  • Meet the challenges of the interdependence between livestock farming and biodiversity
  • Ensure the preservation of the natural heritage and the rural landscape
  • Prepare the adaptation of the territory to climate change and to socio-economic context.

To this end, from 2020 to 2025, a programme of actions will be implemented to raise awareness and mobilise the actors of the Coteaux Gascons area, to support them in the restoration and sustainable management of pastures, meadows and environments linked to livestock farming promote and value their actions and in an area of 163 communes and 260,000 ha.

HOW ?

A team :

MEET OUR TEAM

CONCRETE ACTIONS :

  • Meetings to identify and mobilise local stakeholders, particularly livestock farmers
  • Cross-agricultural and ecological diagnoses, prior to the management and restoration of environments dependent on livestock farming (2,500 hectares of meadows, moors and pastures)
  • Monitoring of biodiversity indicators: orchids, butterflies, birds, to "measure" the effects of agro-pastoralism
  • Technical and land management assistance for farmers and landowners
  • Training for farmers and representatives
  • Awareness-raising tools and events for all, to highlight the value of the area and the benefits of the "biodiversity - livestock" combination
  • Dissemination of the work done to define and re-constitute a network of agro-pastoral environments to be implemented in other European regions
